You can use all three applications to record, store, and share videos but it's important to know when to use each one.

Tool

Storage

Best For

Panopto

Unlimited

  • Uploading and storing videos that are more than a few minutes long.

  • Recording lectures and demos outside of a Zoom meeting.

  • Basic editing.

  • Sharing videos with students in Canvas.

  • Sharing videos with colleagues or a wider audience outside of RISD.

  • Student video submissions.

  • High-quality screen capture (e.g. software demos).

  • Searchable transcripts, table of contents, bookmarks, in-player discussions.

  • Storing and sharing Zoom recordings.

Canvas

2 GB per course

  • Recording very short (webcam only) videos for your Homepage or pages in your Modules.

  • Recording video comments in the Speedgrader or in a Discussion.

Zoom

  • Web meetings and synchronous online classes.

  • All Zoom cloud recordings are automatically saved in Panopto. Use Panopto to store and share your Zoom recordings.

  • Video storage cleanup will occur annually.
