Transcription/closed captioning (cc) is available through Zoom

Zoom has automated, real-time transcription, and it is enabled by default at RISD.

To activate during the meeting:

Click on the Live Transcript button/CC in the bottom middle of your screen.

Post-Event Captions / Transcription:
Panopto, RISD's video editing and storage platform, can generate captions/transcription for recorded events. See Adding/Editing Captions in Panopto. Captions can also be manually edited to improve accuracy.

Managing Manual captioning in Zoom:

Zoom has various options for creating virtual closed captioning in Zoom meetings and webinars that provide subtitles for video conferencing. Participants may use this to follow the conversations easily or meet accessibility requirements. https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/207279736-Managing-manual-captioning

RISD uses Third-party, ADA-compliant services

Real-Time Captions

Some departments or events may require real-time ADA-compliant captioning, called Communication Access Real-time Translation (CART).  In simple terms, human interaction/translation.

There is a cost associated with these services, and the department requesting this service is responsible for the cost (approximately $200/hour).  This service requires a two-week lead time to schedule an event.  Reasonable attempts will be made to honor last-minute requests, but RISD cannot guarantee service provider availability.

To learn more about ADA compliance or whether or not your event requires ADA-compliant captioning, contact Disability Services.

RISD recommends closed captioning for in-person events with over 200 people.
