Removing Google Chrome Browser and Application Files
Modified on: Tue, Apr 23 2024 8:39 AMIn some cases the Chrome Browser may become infected with malware that is especially tricky to remove. Follow the steps below to remove the Google Chrome Browser and its application files from your device.
Please reach out to the IT Service Desk, your Department Technician or the Brown IT Service Center if you do not feel comfortable performing these steps on your own.
For Windows:
Part 1 - Uninstall the application
- On your computer, close all Chrome windows and tabs.
- Click the Start menu Start menu and then Settings.
- Click Apps.
- Under "Apps & features," find and click Google Chrome.
- Click Uninstall.
- Confirm by clicking Uninstall.
- To delete your profile information, like bookmarks and history, check "Also delete your browsing data."
- Click Uninstall.
Part 2 - Remove application files
1. Go to this location using the Run dialog (Windows + R):
C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\
2. Delete the "Chrome" folder (if there is a Chrome folder)
3. Go to this location using the Run dialog (Windows + R):
C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\
4. Delete the "Chrome" folder (if there is a Chrome folder)
For Mac:
Part 1 - Uninstall the application
1. At the bottom of your computer screen, in your Dock, right-click Chrome.
2. Select Quit.
3. Open Finder.
4. Go to the folder containing the Google Chrome application on your computer.
-Tip: It may be in your Applications folder. If not, go to File and then Find, and search for "Google Chrome."
5. Drag Google Chrome to the Trash.
Part 2 - Remove application files
1. At the top of the screen, click Go and then Go to Folder.
2. Enter ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome.
3. Click Go.
4. Select all the folders, and drag them to the Trash.
For iOS
- On your iPhone or iPad, touch and hold the Chrome app
.
- At the top left of the icon, tap Remove
.
- To remove Chrome and delete your profile information, like bookmarks and history, tap Delete.
For Android
1. Press the Menu key.
2. Go to Settings.
3. Scroll down and select Apps.
4. Find Google Chrome and select it.
5. Next, choose Storage.
6. Tap Manage space.
7. Finally, select Clear all data. Press OK to confirm.
